While each story is enjoyable on its own, when it comes to the plot of the overall book, the ending is quick and doesn’t feel as satisfying. As stated above, there are three separate stories, but they all contribute to a story arc that spans the whole book and culminates in the third story. Things I didn’t like: Lukyanenko’s book as a whole does not feel balanced – so much was devoted to setup, but very little in resolution. Anton is many times faced with an ethical dilemma where the schemes for dominance created by the Light don’t look that different from schemes created by the Dark. Finally, I really liked how Lukyanenko portrays Light and Darkness as a matter of perspective.
